Georgians
Winchester's political decline was confirmed during the Georgian era, but the city continued to prosper. The old walls of the city were demolished and the city began to expand. Many independent small shops opened and many professionals set up business. The city's many private schools flourished, which further encouraged the well-healed to settle in the city.
The soldiers now quartered in the city brought in money to the local merchants.
Winchester also attracted the rich and famous set of the day, with the likes of Jane Austen and John Keats. They were undoubtedly drawn to its picturesque setting, fine buildings and place in history.
Strolling about the City today one might think that most buildings are of Georgian origin. However, many of the buildings are older but were faced with brick and re-styled in the neo-classical style favoured by the Georgians. It is my personal favourite style of house. The tall sash windows, ornate doorways and hipped roofs are elegant but understated.
