When you leave Wolvesey Castle, keep left and you will find yourself walking along The Weirs. In pre-historic times, the Itchen flowed in two main channels in the centre of the river valley, near the cathedral. Following the foundation of the Roman town, in about 70 AD, this new artificial channel was created. The old mill you can see has now been converted into flats.
