The next point of interest is the church of St Swithun-upon-Kingsgate. The Kingsgate arch beneath the church is mentioned in the Doomesday Book in 1148. The first recorded mention of the church occurs in 1264; it was burned down by the citizens of the city in a dispute with the Priory. By 1660, the church was in a sad sate of repair. Robert Allen, the porter of Kingsgate, and his wife and family lived in one end of the church and kept their pigs in a hog-sty at the other end. However, by 1677, the bells had been rehung and the building was repaired. |
