City Museum

St Cross HospitalThe museum is easy to find as it sits between the High Street and the Cathedral. The Museum tells the story of the city through display of its extensive archaeological and local history collections.

You can see four models of the city and how it has changed through the centuries.

A recent addition is the Roman `Venta´ Gallery with displays of mosaics that were discovered in archeological digs in the city. The 'Floral' mosaic was found in Brooks and is the earliest found in Winchester. You can see a fragment of it in the museum.

My favourite exhibits are the period shop interiors taken from shops in the High Street: a family run Tobacconists shop and Hunts the Chemist. The chemist was originally leased in 1861 my Mr Hunt. Its location was 45 High Street and it continued to trade until 1980. I wish we still had shops like these, I must be getting old!
